Three American scientists John Clark, Michel H. Deborah, and John M. Martinis have won the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics. They have been awarded this year’s highest scientific honor for groundbreaking research and innovative work in quantum mechanics.
This award was started in 1901, as per the will of Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel. The Nobel Prize is one of the most prestigious awards in the world today.
The Nobel laureates will receive a Nobel medal, a certificate and 11 million Swedish kronor. This is worth about 142 million taka in Bangladeshi currency. In categories where there are multiple Nobel laureates, this money is divided equally among them.
A statement from the Nobel Committee said that the research of these three scientists in the 1980s opened new horizons in understanding the behavior of matter at the quantum level. Their invention plays a significant role in the development of neural network technology in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning.
In Nobel history, the Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded a total of 118 times from 1901 to 2024. To date, 227 scientists have received the prize, of which only five are women including Marie Curie, who became the first woman to win the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903.
Throughout the week, the Nobel Committee will announce the names of the winners in other fields of chemistry, literature, and peace and the Nobel Prize in economics will be announced on October 13.
All winners will be awarded their Nobel Prizes at the formal Nobel Prize ceremony in Sweden next December.
